There are many jobs within the Gate Department. We've listed the positions below to help you find your place in our family.
GC = Gate Crew
The quintessential position of working Gate. These are the folks who work in the lanes, welcoming participants as they first arrive on playa, checking tickets and paperwork (if applicable), and searching cars for stowaways and prohibited items (large plants, dogs, firearms, fireworks). Volunteers usually work in pairs. During peak times, this position is fast paced and lots of work, but very rewarding. You will be standing most of the shift.
LC = Lot Crew
Lot crew are volunteers who assist with issues in the D-lot, Will Call Lot and Staging Lot. Particiapants who end up in the D-lot need special attention, and the Lot Crew take the time to listen to stories and try to figure out solutions to the problems. This position requires people with patience and the ability to stay calm when participants are upset. Experience working the Gate and an undertstanding of the common issues is helpful for this position.
SSC = Support Services Crew
The folks are people who have worked Gate before and are there to help make sure our volunteers are taken care of in the lanes. They make sure you get fed, get breaks, and can answer questions. They are there to help!
LSL = Lot Shift Lead
The Lot Shift Lead is the person who is in charge of operations in the lots. They oversee the volunteers working in the lots and make decisions about how to handle the special cases and issues with people in the D-lot. They are prepared to deal with difficult situations.
SLA & SLB = Shift Lead Manager A & B
Shift Lead Managers oversee Gate operations on a per shift basis. They are the people on the ground running the shift, managing the team of volunteers, and coordinating the training and placement of the volunteers. They resolve and troubleshoot problems and conflicts at the Gate, and serve as the main point of contact on radio for other Burning Man departments. Any issues that volunteers cannot resolve, or any participants who are too difficult to deal with should be passed to one of the Shift Leads.
MOD = Manager on Duty
The Manager on Duty is responsible for on-playa department operations on a per-shift basis. The MOD serves as the primary interface for Burning Man Staff and law enforcement, works as a Shift Lead Manager as necessary, and handles higher level situations and radio calls.

Driver = Driver of Perimeter Vehicle
This volunteer position works in tandem with the Rider as a Perimeter Scout Team. They drive one of the Perimeter vehicles outside of the trash fence, looking for people or things out of place. They intercept people heading in the wrong direction, following Perimeter protocols. The Scout team is in constant radio communication with the Shift Lead Manager and other volunteers on shift.
Rider = Rider in Perimeter Vehicle
This volunteer position works in tandem with the Driver as a Perimeter Scout Team. They ride in one of the Perimeter vehicles outside of the trash fence, looking for people or things out of place. They intercept people heading in the wrong direction, following Perimeter protocols. The Scout team is in constant radio communication with the Shift Lead Manager and other volunteers on shift.
P1 = Point 1 Entrance
Point 1 is an entrance used by Law Enforcement and a select few others pre-approved to do so. The Point 1 team is responsible for making sure that those entering Point 1 have the proper credentials (all others are sent back to the highway). Volunteers working Point 1 interact with law enforcement, staff and vendors.
LH = Lighthouse
This position assists with Perimeter technology to monitor the Perimeter and closure area around the event site. They are looking for creatures of the human kind attempting to sneak into the event. NOTE: You must have training in Lighthouse, and completed a mentor shift before you can do a Lighthouse shift on your own.
SLP = Shift Lead Perimeter
The Perimeter Shift Lead Manager oversees on-playa Perimeter operations on a per-shift basis, managing the team of volunteers working on their shift. They perform all responsibilities of standard Perimeter operations, monitor and participate in intercepts and Perimeter patrols, and resolve and troubleshoot problems. They coordinate with other departments and law enforcement as needed.

FlgTrn = Flagger Training
If you want to be a Flagger this year and you do not have a current NVDOT Highway Flagger Card (good for 2 years), you must attend the training, which takes place on Wednesday of event week in the afternoon. If you were certified last year and have your card, it is still valid and you do not need to attend the training.
Flag = Flagger
Flaggers work on the highway and the gravel. They hold a stop/slow paddle and they maintain positive control of traffic at all times. Flaggers make it possible for us to increase the number of cars leaving BRC per hour by about 60%. If you sign up to be a Flagger you should take the free training to receive your certification. Flaggers are the last people participants see as they leave the event site.
Exiter = Exiter
Exiters work on Gate Road and in BRC directing traffic and troubleshooting issues in the traffic flow system. They maintain lanes, watch for odd traffic patterns, and maintain fairness for all leaving BRC. They notice things like broken vehicles and unstable / unsafe loads. Exiters are some of the last people with whom BRC citizens get to interact.
EC = Exodus Coordinator
The Exodus Coordiantor helps to make sure that Flaggers and Exiters are placed and provides general assistance throughout the Exodus process.
SetUp = Exodus Set Up
A small set up crew assists the Exodus managers to set up the cones and lanes in preparation for the mass egress of people out of Black Rock City.
Strike = Exodus Clean Up
After all the participants are gone (or most of them anyway), a small crew of people cleans up the cones and lanes on Gate road.
