Volunteer Coordinators

The Volunteer Coordinator Team works year ’round in coordination with Support Services to recruit and build the best Gate team we can have each year.
Miranda
Volunteer Coordinator Team Lead & Gate Office Manager

Miranda entered the Gates of BRC in 2003 as part of the posse of Ultra Gypsy. She expected a simple "camp-out," and had no idea that the event would be life-changing or have such a deep and lasting impact. The philosophy that a community can not only survive, but thrive on a gift-based economy blew her away. Miranda loves the creative energy of burners, the art, and is ever-amazed and touched by the time and talent that volunteers give to make Burning Man happen.

Involved with theme camps, creating art cars, and several large scale art pieces, she now focuses most of her energy on her beloved Gate team. She joined Gate in 2004, began managing the Gate Office in 2007, joined the Volunteer Coordination team in 2010, and now leads the VC team.

The VC team works hard thoughout the year creating and executing creative recruiting programs to fill the 3200+ shifts that Gate needs to make the event run smoothly. As well as helping new volunteers get started, they also create and implement kickass retention programs to make sure our volunteers know how much they are valued and appreciated. "We work hard, play hard, and get a little crazy out there...but it’s one of the most rewarding parts of my entire year! If you love Burning Man, working for Gate, Perimeter & Exodus Department is a great way to give back."
Magpie
Volunteer Coordinator

They call him The Magpie, and he’s here to help! Burning since 2001, he helps in many ways:
  • As Volunteer Coordinator, he's here to help GP&E staff get organized.
  • As a triple-threat member of all three branches of Gate, Perimeter, and Exodus, he’s here to help you realize that there is no escaping him.
  • As a member of the secretive and elite Team Death Ray, he’s here to help light up your night
  • As a gentleman of refined and sophisticated tastes, he’s here to help you understand that what you’re drinking is gawdawful swill.
  • When not wrangling dust-ninjas, he’s a soccer-mom, and cures cancer.
